Malindi Press was started because I was searching for a specific kind of media company, a media company that I did not see. I wanted somewhere that not only covered Black culture globally but also commented on world affairs through a Black lens. I dreamt of a media company I thought I would never see, until I created it. My goal was not only to reshape the Black narrative but to consolidate culture. I wanted to create something that brought thoughtful people together. Those who see culture not just as entertainment, but as a way of understanding the world and each other.
For those who have supported us by interacting, reading, and sharing, I appreciate you. For those just joining us on this journey, welcome. I’m Z. Masongo, the founder and editor of Malindi Press, and it is fortuitous that we would meet during times such as these, tumultuous times that require Black media to be beacons of both honesty and clarity. I’m an attorney by trade but a writer and cultural spectator by passion. Malindi Press was started as a place where we could be inquisitive in our insights and globalist in our cultural curiosities. I want nothing more than to comment on and cover Black culture with the seriousness it deserves because culture is sacred and should be handled with the utmost care. It matters to know you’re not thinking and feeling alone, and Malindi Press exists to be in conversation with you.
As Malindi Press evolves, we hope you trust us on this journey. This year, we will continue to expand how we tell stories. Our podcast, Pause for a Moment, explores the stories, ideas, and insights that shape Black culture. We’re also launching a monthly guide, a curated selection of places to go, performances to see, restaurants to visit, and cultural experiences to explore. This will begin in New York with touches of international destinations. And soon, Malindi Press will introduce a store featuring carefully selected books by Black authors, art by Black artists, and thoughtfully crafted apparel. Everything we build is with the hope that it speaks to your curiosity and perspective.
