In 1971, Howard University won a national championship in soccer. It was the first national championship for any sport for Howard and was a time of great celebration and pride for both Howard and HBCU’s around the country. About a year later, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) stripped Howard of their title due to some players previously playing amateur soccer in Trinidad and some players not having the academic requirements to be eligible. Howard attempted to get more of an explanation and at the time the reasoning didn’t make any sense at all.
