For the first time in almost 4 decades, the esteemed writer and professor, Jamaica Kincaid, released a children's book. The book, An Encyclopedia of Gardening For Colored Children, will revolve around plants and gardening.
Talking to Harpers Bazaar, Kincaid said:
The text that inspired my interpretation of the garden is the Garden of Eden in the Bible. I came to understand a garden there in this way. There are many layered things about it, but the garden in particular, the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge—I’ve interpreted the Tree of Life as agriculture, and the Tree of Knowledge as horticulture.
The last children's book that Kincaid published was Annie, Gwen, Lilly, Pam, and Tulip in 1986.
Last month, Kincaid received the St. Louis Literary Award, which is an award presented by the St. Louis University libraries. "The award honors a writer who deepens our insight into the human condition and expands the scope of our compassion."
