As the tide is turning more people want to go to Africa and learn more about the culture, the food, and the people. It may become common practice for schools to send groups of students to various countries to submerge themselves in the culture. Malcolm X College, one of the city colleges of Chicago decided to start sending students to study abroad in Africa. The countries the students will visit include South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and several others.

David Sanders, the president of Malcolm X College told Austin Weekly, “It’s not the first time that Malcolm X has done study abroad programs, but it’s the first time that we’ve done a program of this size and magnitude with this focus.”

Hopefully, this is the start of a trend of students heading over. This will be both an opportunity for students to be active parts in changing the narrative surrounding Africa and an opportunity for relationships and bridges to be built between students here and students abroad.

Where There Be Dragons, Global Leadership Adventures, and Travel For Teens are 3 of several organizations that feature study-abroad initiatives in Africa. Go Overseas is a great resource to filter and discover study abroad programs.

We've covered the Nyamwange Foundation in a previous article and they also send students to Kenya. However, their students are high school students and not college-age. Their initiative is called Birthright Afrika
