This week,  the Black Male College Explorers Program at Bethune Cookman University was the recipient of a $300,000 grant from the NBA Foundation. The Black Male College Explorers Program is focused on helping males in grades 6-12 through academic excellence and holistic male development. It was founded in 1993. The NBA Foundation has surpassed $100 million in grants it's given and has an overall commitment to giving $300 million. The program aims to create economic empowerment in Black communities, and the Foundation was founded in 2020. A lot of programs were started in 2020 with different goals surrounding Black empowerment and diverse goals. Most of them have either been disbanded or have not fulfilled the promises they made. It's good to see the NBA Foundation is still standing by the commitments that were made at that time.

This week, an executive order was issued that would cut funding to NPR and PBS. On its surface, it seems innocuous as to how it may impact the Black audience but let's discuss it for a second. One of the potential issues is having a limited pipeline for balanced and educational information which often comes from public media. Information which often benefits Black audiences who want quality information. Public media also did a great job at airing content such as documentaries or other unscripted shows that covered Black history and culture. Lastly, when public media is weakened in any way and the next option is corporate media, marginalized groups may be the ones that take the hit. To be fair, around 2 % of NPR’s budget comes from federal grants. For PBS, it's about 16 %. So, cutting funding may not hurt that much, but it could be a slippery slope to begin divesting from the kind of media that for years marginalized groups could trust.
