Happy Sunday! Whether you're a new subscriber or an existing subscriber, welcome back. Here are a few articles you should check out from this week!

This week, we had an opportunity to attend the private screening of a short film called ‘Birthright Afrika.” The film was put together by The Nyamwange Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization that gives Black and Brown kids scholarships, and mentorship, and takes them on a summer trip to Kenya to both learn and explore. Throughout the film, the narrative of the organization’s founder, Joseph Nyamwange, is weaved into the narratives of the children he’s helped, as well as the narratives of his parents and family who are the inspiration for the work that he’s doing with the foundation. As Black History Month comes to a close, this film is a stark reminder that Black futures are also important. The young people impacted by this organization will be vital to the innovation and leadership of the future. Check out the trailer below!
In October 2017, fashion model Anok Yai was discovered on the Howard University campus at homecoming. What started as a viral photo evolved into her becoming one of the most recognizable models in the world. This week, for a Harper’s Bazaar editorial, she returned to The Mecca, Howard University for an editorial. This was a full circle moment for Howard, which is the starting point for many great careers including former Vice President Kamala Harris, former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, actors Taraji P. Henson and Chadwick Boseman, and Nobel laureates Ralph Bunche and Toni Morrison, among many others.
From Hattie McDaniel becoming the first African American to win an Academy Award in 1940 as a Best Supporting Actress, to Sidney Poitier becoming the first African American to win an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1963, Black actors have been pushing forward. Historically, Hollywood has not always been kind to Black actors. From the pervasive use of Blackface to the refusal to allocate big budgets to Black-led films, Hollywood is a constant uphill battle for Black entertainers. It’s taken some time for Black actors to become the number one name on the call sheet, which in entertainment is the most important person on the cast. Apple TV released a trailer this week for a two-part documentary called “Number One on the Call Sheet” that explores Black entertainers in Hollywood. Check out the trailer below!
