Happy Sunday! Whether you're a new subscriber or an existing subscriber, welcome back. Here are a few articles you should check out from this week!

Ryan Coogler’s critically acclaimed film, Sinners, was released in April of this year. On a $90 million budget, the film has now made over $300 million globally and has been successful enough that some fans have called for a sequel, which Ryan Coogler has shut down. The story in the film takes place in Clarksdale, Mississippi but was filmed in Louisiana due to tax credit issues and lack of sound stages. Despite being the center of the film, Clarksdale doesn’t have any movie theaters. Petitions were written, calls were made, and this week, there was a screening in Clarksdale where the film is set. The residents got an opportunity to see a film at the Clarksdale Civic Auditorium.

Earlier this month, Maryland lawmakers were proposing a bill to study reparations and some steps that could be taken. The bill was subsequently vetoed by Maryland Governor Wes Moore. Many saw this veto as a betrayal to the people and as a Black governor, as someone who didn’t care about his base. This week, he defended his position and commented that he didn’t believe now was the “time for another multiyear study on something that we already know.” He received some pushback and reminded people of the work he has done in Maryland with HBCUs and the policies that his administration has put in place to benefit the state. Reparations have always been a talking point and the stakeholders in Maryland are adamant about this specific bill as well as confident it will be eventually put through.
