We're just wrapping up week one of the Olympics and there are a few notable performances by Black athletes that need their flowers. On Thursday, in the individual all-around finals, Simone Biles won gold. She also won her tenth Olympic gold with her win in vault. Her greatest threat was Rebeca Andrade from Brazil who won silver. In the women's 100m final, Sha'Carri Richardson made her Olympic debut. Although running impressively in qualifiers, it was St. Lucia's Julien Alfred who won the gold. That marked St. Lucia's first Olympic medal. Sha'Carri Richardson took silver and Melissa Jefferson took bronze. Joshua Liendo from Canada won bronze in the men's 100m butterfly. France's Teddy Riner won his fourth and fifth Olympic gold medals in Judo for the +100kg final and the mixed team final. Beatriz Souza from Brazil won gold in the +78kg final. Joshua Chaptegi won the 10,000m final for Uganda. Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith, and Mallory Swanson are leading the USA women's soccer team and putting themselves in a position to win a medal.

Lebron James is leading the MVP race for the basketball portion of the Olympics. Team USA's Omari Jones defeated Bulgaria's Rami Kiwan in their quarterfinal, so now he's guaranteed to at least get a medal for boxing. David de Pina won Cape Verde's first-ever medal at the Olympics with a bronze medal in boxing. Thea Lafond won a gold medal in the triple jump. This would mark the first time Dominica has ever won a medal. Leo Neugebauer of Germany won a silver medal in the decathlon. Nigeria's women’s basketball team has become the first-ever African team to reach the quarter-finals. Rajindra Campbell made history in the Men’s shot put final at the Paris Olympics on Saturday, becoming the first Jamaican man to win an Olympic medal in a throwing event and Jamaica’s first medal at the Paris games. Noah Lyles won gold in the 100m mens final.

Team USA’s gold medal-winning gymnastics team has all the talent to compete with the world, but one of the unsung heroes is Dr. Marcia Faustin. She is one of the doctors who provides care for the gymnastics team. Dr. Faustin is a graduate of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.
