Happy Sunday! Whether you’re a new subscriber or an existing subscriber, welcome back. Here are a few articles you should check out from this week!

Since health is wealth, we’ll start this week focused on that. After all, we only get one body.
Ohio is working around the clock to eliminate health barriers for Black women in the state. In the state, Black women are more likely to work at jobs that don't provide healthcare. They are also more likely than other racial groups to die while giving birth. That said, sometimes the numbers tell one story, but going out and having conversations tells another story altogether. The questions for this survey focused on access to medical services, perceived discrimination, barriers to care, and financial stress related to healthcare costs. Surveys like these are important for legislative purposes. It is paramount to have conversations so the specific pain points are clear and explicit.
Morehouse College of Medicine launched a pain equity course, one of the first of its kind. The course will address pain prevention, treatment, and management. Studies have shown that there are racial biases in how pain is assessed in different racial groups. These biases stem from false beliefs about the biological makeup of different races. These sorts of thought processes negatively impact Black patients, and one of the ways to counteract such prevalent notions may be to start at the medical school level by educating students. This course was developed along with BLKHLTH, a nonprofit focused on health equity.

You value the creation, ownership, and distribution of anything pertaining to Black culture. You also understand that controlling our culture is important to the preservation of our stories. When the tug of war between who is creating the stories and who is distributing the stories is off, then the whole ecosystem for how we move forward is lost. As Black culture has now become the dominant culture globally, our inability to control our art, specifically music, will become a problem. Essay 001 will speak directly to us about this dilemma and some potential solutions. This will be the first of many essays exploring a range of topics spanning art, culture, literature, science, and everything in between. They will be released sporadically, but if you have anything that you want covered, then comment or message!
