Happy Sunday! Whether you're a new subscriber or an existing subscriber, welcome back. Here are a few articles you should check out from this week!

Nas
Nas is one of the investors behind a proposed casino in Queens, NY. This week, the casino received approval from the Community Advisory Board. It’s a $5.5 billion casino that they are saying will create thousands of jobs for the people of Queens, as well as spaces for residents in the community to eat, gamble, and watch performances. This comes a week after a similar proposal by a team that included Jay-Z was rejected. Some have tried to draw an equivalence between the two, but the key difference between the two proposals is the locations. Jay-Z was proposing a new casino in the middle of Times Square. The community was against the casino because of the potential disruption to Broadway and other tourist attractions in the area. Nas’s bid didn’t get the same community resistance, which led to a unanimous vote. The last hurdle will be the Gaming Facility Location vote. If they get approved from that vote, the casino will begin construction, and they are looking for a 2026 opening.

Kai Cenat
Last night, Kai Cenat surpassed 1 million subscribers during his Mafiathon 3 stream, setting a new Twitch record for the most subs gained during a single stream. In the time of the attention economy, there are lessons to be learned here. Mafiathon is an ongoing stream that runs 24/7, featuring various celebrities, streamers, and cultural figures. For this Mafiathon, 15% of the proceeds will be going to support the construction of a school in Nigeria in Yaba, Lagos. There have been some issues with construction, but the school is on its way to being built. For this record-breaking Mafiathon, people have come on to either maximize their audiences or to promote specific things they were doing. Streaming has become an extension of traditional media companies, and it's become a routine part of film and album rollouts. Of the many celebrities, Mariah Carey came on to promote her album, and Marlon Wayans was on to promote his recent film. Law Roach, Winnie Harlow, and Bloody Osiris joined to judge a fashion show. Draymond Green joined to talk about basketball, and the understanding is that Lebron James will join on day 30 of the stream. Among the stream of celebrities, with these streams, Kai Cenat and his team have managed to find ways to keep the audience engaged and have what seems to be both a major arch of storytelling that new viewers can follow and their own subplots and jokes that only viewers who follow all of their streams will understand. These days, media companies struggle to keep audiences engaged for 30-minute TV shows, so for them to keep streamers entertained for weeks deserves a lot of credit. Some have been apprehensive to accept that streaming is here to stay, and hopefully, this will show them that streaming can’t be ignored.
