Politics & Global Health
The Office of Management and Budget has moved to withhold billions in HIV/AIDS relief funds already approved by Congress. Constitutionally, it is Congress not the executive that controls federal spending, making this a striking overstep of authority. These funds were slated for PEPFAR, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, launched by President George W. Bush and credited with saving more than 26 million lives globally. PEPFAR is central to prevention, treatment, education, and partnerships, particularly in African nations where HIV rates remain disproportionately high. Blocking these funds doesn’t just freeze budgets, it threatens to unravel decades of progress in global health and disproportionately impacts Black communities worldwide.
A study published in Scientific Reports on August 23rd examined the effects of inadequate sanitation in Ethiopia using 2019 data from over 8,000 households. The researchers explored the underlying causes of health risks linked to poor sanitation. Globally, over 1.7 billion people lack access to basic sanitation facilities. Issues like these are linked to both healthcare outcomes and educational outcomes in low income countries. This study showed that only 10% of households in Ethiopia had access to safely managed sanitation services, highlighting the urgent need for targeted interventions. The study also highlighted that factors such as “lack of awareness, poverty, and inadequate infrastructure play a significant role in the prevalence of unimproved sanitation.” One interesting part of this study is the role that the media plays in sanitation. It found that households with access to a television were less likely to have unimproved sanitation than those without. Of course, this can be attributed to finances. If a household can afford a television, then they may be more likely to afford sanitation tools and have the resources for better practices. In totality, what is needed is more government action to imrpove the sanitation issue both in Ethiopia and anywhere else. Taking action to improve sanitation will have far-reaching benefits for the country as a whole.

Jay-Z
Music & Legacy
In 1997, Jay-Z rapped about wealth and ambition on Imaginary Player. Nearly three decades later, those lyrics feel prophetic. With a net worth of $2.5 billion, the Roc Nation mogul is the richest musician alive, and building one of hip-hop’s greatest dynasties while raising a family with Beyoncé. This week, the track saw a 300% spike in streams, thanks to Cardi B’s new single Imaginary Playerz, which samples the classic. Hip-hop has often recycled its own sound, but what’s remarkable here is the generational loop: a contemporary superstar breathing new life into the work of a living legend who now sits at the pinnacle of music and business.
Style & Culture
It’s been a decade since Tyler, the Creator dropped Cherry Bomb, his raw and polarizing 2015 album. To celebrate, he’s released a Golf Wang capsule collection inspired by the record, along with a vinyl reissue for longtime fans. But Tyler didn’t stop there: he also shared a new video for Darling, I and unveiled the lineup for this year’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival. Los Angeles will see performances from Childish Gambino, Clipse, Doechii, Samara Cyn, and more. This is all a testament to Tyler’s evolution from rebellious outsider to cultural architect curating entire stages of Black creativity.
