Happy Sunday! Whether you're a new subscriber or an existing subscriber, welcome back. Here are a few articles you should check out from this week!

This week, the Supreme Court decided a pivotal case for the future of both Planned Parenthood and Medicaid. The Court decided that Planned Parenthood and one of its patients cannot sue South Carolina over its effort to deny funding. Overall, this would mean that South Carolina can deny Medicaid funds to Planned Parenthood. This ruling leaves a large amount of discretion to the states to decide what they want to do with Medicaid funds. Let's start at the beginning. What is Medicaid? Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that helps cover medical costs for some people with limited income and resources.

Currently, 18.5% of Medicaid enrollees are Black. More than 40% of all U.S. births are covered by Medicaid. 65% of Black births by Black mothers are covered by Medicaid. Due to the medical reliance on Medicaid by the Black community, rulings such as the recent one put Black mothers and Black families in a compromising position since each state can do as they wish. If states can cut funding to Planned Parenthood clinics, which provide pivotal services, the families affected disproportionately will be Black families. Access to quality healthcare is already an issue in rural America, and this may exacerbate that issue much more.

Edward Enninful

Anna Wintour stepped down as Vogue Editor in Chief this week, and many have been ruminating over who her replacement may be. OF the replacements mentioned, there have been 3 Black names that have come up. Ghanian-born Brit Edward Enninful, who used to run British Vogue from 2017 to 2023 is the most prominent of the three, but his announcement about his global media editorial called 72 Magazine may impact his commitment to pivoting and building a brand that isn't his.

Another name mentioned is Chioma Nnadi. She was the first Black woman to hold a senior editorial role at Vogue and is the current editor-in-chief of British Vogue. She's been with the company for over 10 years and undoubtedly has the experience to take over Vogue and add some much-needed culture to the brand. The last name is Lindsay Peoples. She's the current Editor in Chief of The Cut and previously was the Editor in Chief of Teen Vogue. All 3 names mentioned are already familiar with the Condé Nast system and collectively have spent time both domestically and internationally. It will be interesting to see how this transition is handled and if a Black person takes over one of the most powerful positions in fashion.
